🤖 Beat the Bots: Resume Tips

In today’s job market, you’re not just trying to impress a hiring manager — you’re also trying to impress their robot.

Most companies now use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to scan resumes before a human ever sees them. If your resume isn’t formatted correctly or doesn’t include the right keywords, it may never make it past the bots.

Here are some smart, simple tips to help your resume survive the scan and get noticed — by both machines and people.

đź“„ What is an ATS, and Why Does it Matter?

An Applicant Tracking System is software that automatically reviews job applications. It scans your resume for keywords, formats, and sections that match the job posting.

If your resume scores too low in the system, it may be filtered out — no matter how qualified you are.

âś… How to Make Your Resume Bot-Friendly

1. Use Keywords Wisely

Study the job posting and sprinkle relevant keywords throughout your resume. If they’re looking for “project management,” “budget tracking,” or “customer service,” make sure those terms appear (where true).

2. Keep it Simple

Fancy graphics, tables, and unusual fonts may confuse ATS software. Stick with clean, professional layouts in Word or PDF format.

3. Avoid Headers & Footers

Some ATS systems can’t read text inside headers or footers. Keep all essential information in the main body of your document.

4. Spell Out Acronyms

If you use acronyms (like KPI), also include the full phrase (“Key Performance Indicators”) somewhere so both humans and bots understand.

5. Choose the Right File Format

Most ATS-friendly resumes are submitted as .docx or plain-text PDFs. Avoid images or scanned documents.
